MANAGER OF SHELTER OPERATIONS (MSO)

POSITION SUMMARY:  Responsible for the daily operations of the animal shelter and its support staff.  Manages and supervises internal animal care programs and services of CVHS. Develops and manages humane programs and services to heighten awareness and education in the community.  In the absence of the Executive Director, the Manager assumes responsibility for in-shelter situations needing immediate attention.

HOURS:  Full time, salaried position (minimum 40 hours/week).  One weekend day is required and some holidays and evenings may be necessary.

BENEFITS:  After a 90-day introductory period is completed, benefits eligibility includes health, dental, short-term disability and earned time.

ACCOUNTABILITY:   The Manager of Shelter Operations is responsible to the Executive Director for the day-to-day operations of the shelter and provides overall supervision to all shelter staff.  The Manager is responsible for updating the Executive Director on, at a minimum, a weekly basis regarding issues and/or problems affecting the operation of the shelter.  The Manager is accountable to the Executive Director for carrying out the policies and procedures of CVHS.  The Executive Director must authorize any major changes in policy/procedure.

2.     Treats the public, CVHS volunteers and other CVHS employees in a courteous manner.
3.     Makes every effort to place animals in appropriate homes.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ensures that the shelter staff understands, is trained in and follows CVHS Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) and Safety Protocols; Supervises and is responsible for shelter administration; Manages Staff and staff training; Oversees all animal care; Oversees animal care and paperwork in cruelty cases; Oversees all programming related to shelter animals; Oversees all animal related programming for public; Responsible for Budget for shelter administration; Responsible for purchasing of materials and supplies related to animal care; Responsible for maintaining animal computer database; Responsible for gathering and interpreting shelter animal statistics; Oversees and is responsible for overall customer service relating to animal programs; Responsible for public relations relating to animal programs; Reports in a timely manner to Executive Director.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:


1.     Individual with a minimum of two years proven experience-managing personnel preferably in an
        animal-related industry.

2.     Knowledge of kennel management and rudimentary veterinary medical skills and experience
        required.

3.     Must be able to prioritize and multi-task in a hectic and fast-paced environment.
4.     Must have excellent written and oral communication skills and be an energetic, enthusiastic and
        optimistic team player.

5.     Must have basic word processing and computer skills.
 
EDUCATION:
  Bachelor's Degree preferred.

ANIMAL CARE TECH

PURPOSE OF JOB: Under the supervision of the Shelter Manager, Assistant Shelter Manager, the Animal Care Tech is responsible for daily cleaning and general care of designated animals residing in the shelter.

HOURS:  Hourly, full and part-time positions.  Work schedule is normally mornings 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM based on species of animal care, current hours of operation, and current work schedule.  Hours may include weekends.

BENEFITS: After an 90-day introductory period is completed, benefits for full-time positions includes health, dental and an Earned Time Plan, part-time positions accrued Earned Time Plan can be used after six (6) months.

ACCOUNTABILITY:
The Animal Care Tech reports to the Manager of Shelter Operations or Assistant Manager of Shelter Operations.
1.      Treats all animals with compassion and kindness.
2.      Treats the public, CVHS volunteers and other CVHS employees in a courteous manner.
3.      Strives for high level of animal care, upholding the shelter's ideals, mission and policies in all facets of daily operation.
4.      Makes every effort to help the staff place pets in appropriate homes by informing the Manager of Shelter Operations/Assistant Manager and Care Coordinators of behavior or medical issues which are noted during cleaning and handling the animals. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Responsibilities for the Animal Care Tech include, but are not limited to, the following:
1.      Following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), clean/disinfect all kennels, cages and food and water bowls daily, including maintaining clean cages throughout the day – animals typically spill their food and water and need close monitoring.
2.      Feed/water all designated animals, ensure they have a healthy supply of the appropriate food and always have fresh, clean water.
3.      Do daily laundry – wash, dry, fold, and put away in proper storage all dirty laundry.
4.      Wash and disinfect all food and water bowls, litter pans, toys and crates.
5.      Report any problems to Manager of Shelter Operations/Assistant Manager of Shelter Operations or Animal Care Coordinators.
6.      Take out trash (keep trash receptacles clean and free of excrement and food to maintain a sanitary and fresh-smelling atmosphere).
7.      Sweep/wash floors daily, dust-exposed surfaces, keep counters clear, limit clutter.
8.      Wash lobby and bathroom floors and make lobby presentable to public.
9.      Make sure appropriate cage cards are in place when cleaning procedures are finished.
10.  Sort donated food and restock shelves in various rooms with food and other needed supplies such as litter, paper towels and laundry items
11.  Animals cared for may include cats, dogs, puppies, kittens, birds, reptiles, rodents, and wildlife.  The Animal Care Tech will become proficient in cleaning and care of a variety of animals.

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, AND BUSINESS ACUMEN:
a.       Individual preferred with a minimum of three (3) months of experience caring for companion animals in a veterinary practice, animal shelter, grooming salon, training facility, or other related business.
b.      Must be able to prioritize and focus with multiple and numerous distractions.
c.       Must be an energetic and optimistic team player.
d.      Must be able to lift, at a minimum, 50 lbs.
e.       Must possess a love for and dedication to animals and their people.
f.        Must be willing and able to work with a variety of animal species and understand how to be safe while providing their care and tending to the sometimes intricate and specialized needs of various animals. 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:  High school diploma preferred.
