Holiday Pet Hints

The holidays can be a merry time for all your pets with a few extra precautions.  Starting with your tree, chose a spot in the house where the tree is out of the foot traffic and can stay standing easily.  By a wall or a corner is ideal with easy reach to electric oulets.  Secure the tree so a rambunctious puppy or kitten cannot knock the tree over.  Try clear fishing line since it looks invisible and is very strong.

Use string to hang ornaments instead of hooks and pet "safer" ornaments of plastic or wood work the best.  Any shiny tinsel may look festive but it can be deadly for a cat or kitten.  Skip tinsel if you have a pet.  Try stringing cranberries and popcorn.  It can be used for the birds outside after the holiday.

Any dog and almost every puppy will want to sniff and check out your presents. That might include chewing through the wrapping!  Consider storing the presents in a safe spot until right before the holiday.  Then supervise you pet while he looks for that special gift just for him.

Water your tree to prevent needle loss. Just be sure your pet does not use the tree stand as a water bowl.  The best advice is to always be sure your pet is not alone around your decorations.

My Pet Is Lost! What Do I Do?

It’s important that you visit ALL THE SHELTERS in the area to look for your pet, because animals can wander far from home. Although you are welcome to call Cocheco Valley Humane Society, it is important to visit the shelter to take a good look. If you don’t find your pet at the shelter, leave a lost pet report and current photo with the staff. We also have a lost pets bulletin board where you may post a flyer with a picture/description of your pet.

What to do next:

  1. Notify friends and neighbors that your pet is lost.
  2. Contact veterinary practices in your area. They may have a Lost and Found bulletin board in their offices.
  3. Read the “found” ads, and take out a “lost” ad in the newspapers.
  4. If your neighborhood permits, post fliers in the area where you lost your pet.
  5. Don’t give up!  Check each shelter daily. After we check our lost animal reports CVHS will put stray animals up for adoption after the seven day waiting period and a thorough medical and behavior evaluation is complete. It is our greatest desire for your pet to go home and CVHS makes every effort to send any stray animal home if we can. Call in and see what animals have been brought in. We are happy to help with your search.

Next time be sure...

  • Your dog or cat wears a securely fastened collar with a current rabies tag, license tag and/or an ID tag with your present address and phone numbers.
  • Your address and phone numbers are on file with the veterinarian who provided your pet’s most recent vaccinations.
  • Your contact information is current with the registry for your pet’s microchip identification implant. A microchip identification implant is the size of a grain of rice and is inserted under an animal’s skin. It contains a number that is filed with a national registry. The registry keeps owner contact information. When a shelter or veterinary practice finds an implant on a lost pet, they contact the registry. To get a microchip ID for your pet, talk to your veterinary or call CVHS. Every dog and cat adopted from CVHS has a registered microchip ID so your first year is on us!

Are you thinking of a pet for over the holidays?

Christmas and other festive celebrations are a wonderful time of year but getting a pet around the holidays can be difficult for both you, your parents and the pet!  It's full of excitement.  No one wants to worry if a new kitten or puppy is getting proper care when they could be opening presents and eating holiday treats!

Sometimes in the hustle and bustle of the holidays we forget that animals need homes too!  It is a great time to give a gift card for a new pet.  The shelter is open throughout the holidays after the big day.  Then it can be a family decision with you and your parents coming to the shelter to pick out some lucky pet that you are sure you want to have.  You can investigate all kinds of animals and make a great choice to give an animal a home that you can love for a lifetime.

Cocheco Valley Has SOOOOO Many Cats!  Help!!!

This fall CVHS has more cats than usual!  We have cat living everywhere!  We even have a new cat room over on the office side of the shelter.  This particular room is being used for kitties that can live with other cats easily.  And it is nice to have them here to visit and pet.  But, they need to go home where they can be loved.  Be sure to tell everyone that we have many, many cats ready for adoption.  Make posters for your school and church.  Make announcements at your scout meeting or church youth group.  Cocheco Valley Humane Society can really use your help!!!

Happy Holidays!
